Summary
You can still build muscle after 40, and the research says you can build it at close to the same rate as a 25-year-old. What has to change is not how hard you train, it is how strategically you train, eat, and recover.
Alain Gonzalez is a fitness coach, author, and the creator of the largest YouTube channel dedicated to men’s fitness over 40. He has spent more than 17 years helping men build muscle and get their health back, and his book is Muscle After 40. In this conversation we walk through his four pillars of muscle growth: mindset, training, nutrition, and recovery. We cover why volume is the thing that has to change with age, why movement quality sits above everything else in the gym, how to order your nutrition so protein comes first, and why recovery is the pillar most people over 40 quietly skip.

Key Takeaways
Can you actually build muscle after 40, or is maintaining the best you can hope for?
You can build it, and at close to the rate a younger person would. Alain points to research where men aged 65 to 75 gained muscle at the same rate as men aged 21 to 29, and to muscle biopsy work showing older adults activate the same muscle-building pathways as younger ones. In one study, participants in their 90s gained 174% more strength after eight weeks of resistance training. The machinery still works. The strategy has to change, not the ambition.
Why does mindset come before training and nutrition in the four pillars?
Because the belief that decline is inevitable quietly becomes your training plan. Alain has coached for almost two decades and says the men who get the best results simply hold a different mindset than the ones who stall. If you have already decided that maintenance is your ceiling, you will not put your best foot forward, and the effort never shows up to be measured.
How does training actually have to change after 40?
Less than most people think, except for volume. Alain says intensity and frequency can stay broadly the same, but recovery capacity is what drops, so two hard sets often beat four. The goal is to generate as much mechanical tension as possible without digging the recovery hole so deep that you cannot come back and do it again.
Now the thing that really does change is, you know, the volume. For example, we can’t recover from as much as we used to, so we might have to make adjustments there.

How much protein do you need, and does it matter when you eat it?
Protein sits at the top of Alain’s nutrition staircase, above total calories, because without the building blocks the calories cannot become muscle. After 40 the distribution starts to matter too, because anabolic resistance weakens the muscle-building signal you get from a meal. He recommends splitting protein across three to five meals of 30 to 40 grams each, which both maximizes the signal at every sitting and makes the daily target far easier to hit.
Should you bulk and cut the way bodybuilders do?
Alain says no, and prefers recomposition. Building muscle is slow either way, so a bulk mostly buys you fat you then have to diet off, and the more fat you carry the worse your body partitions nutrients toward muscle. Research shows you can build muscle even in a slight deficit, so eating around maintenance gets you the same muscle without the cut, and without building eating habits you will later have to break.
What is the most overlooked pillar?
Recovery, and inside recovery, sleep. Alain puts movement quality and training load first because they are preventative, but calls sleep by far the most important active recovery tool, and the one people know matters yet refuse to prioritize. He also flags chronic stress, the bills and family and work that weigh on you constantly, as something people dismiss as just part of life rather than treating as a recovery cost.
